What Are Combination Prosthetics?
Combination prosthetics are solutions that unite the benefits of fixed and removable dental prostheses. They consist of a fixed component (crowns or a bridge cemented onto the teeth) and a removable component (a denture attached to the fixed part via precision mechanisms). This combination enables stable and natural-looking rehabilitation even in complex cases involving significant tooth loss.
Combination prosthetics are particularly suited to patients who are missing a large number of teeth where the remaining teeth cannot support a conventional bridge but can serve as anchors for a combined restoration.
Types of Combination Prosthetics
In our practice we fabricate several types of combined prosthetic restorations:
Telescopic crowns: a double-crown system in which the inner crown is cemented onto the tooth and the outer crown is incorporated into the denture. The telescopic system provides firm retention while allowing easy removal for cleaning.
Precision attachments: miniature precision mechanisms that connect the fixed and removable parts of the restoration. Attachments are hidden within the structure, so the restoration looks just like natural teeth from the outside.
Bar systems: a metal bar connects crowns on the remaining teeth or implants, and the denture clips onto it. This system provides good stability and even distribution of chewing forces.
Benefits of Combination Prosthetics
Combination prosthetics offer several advantages over conventional removable dentures:
Stability: precision attachment mechanisms ensure firm retention without rocking or shifting during speech and chewing.
Aesthetics: no visible metal clasps; all connecting elements are hidden within the structure, giving the restoration a natural appearance.
Function: improved distribution of chewing forces thanks to the combination of fixed and removable elements, protecting the remaining teeth.
Hygiene: the removable component can be easily taken out for thorough cleaning, enabling good oral hygiene.
Longevity: well-crafted combination prosthetics with proper maintenance can last for many years.
