Cercon Zirconia Ceramics

Metal-free crowns and bridges with outstanding aesthetics and durability

What Is Cercon Zirconia Ceramics?

Cercon is a system for fabricating metal-free dental restorations based on zirconium-oxide ceramics (ZrO2). Zirconia is a very strong and biocompatible white material that closely replicates the natural translucency and lustre of tooth enamel. Unlike conventional metal-ceramic crowns, Cercon restorations contain no metal substructure, eliminating the dark margin at the gumline and achieving a natural appearance. The Cercon system combines CAD/CAM technology with premium ceramic materials, delivering restorations that are both natural-looking and mechanically more durable than traditional solutions.

Applications and Fabrication

Cercon zirconia ceramics are used for a wide range of prosthetic restorations: Individual crowns: ideal for both anterior and posterior teeth. The zirconia core provides strength while the ceramic veneer ensures a natural appearance. Bridges: zirconia enables the fabrication of bridges spanning up to 14 units with high strength, without the need for a metal substructure. Implant abutments: zirconia abutments and crowns on implants for optimal aesthetics in the aesthetic zone. The fabrication process begins with a digital scan or a precision impression of the prepared teeth. The zirconia core is manufactured using CAD/CAM technology, digitally designed and machine-milled from a solid zirconia block. It is then layered with aesthetic porcelain and individually colour-matched to blend naturally with the adjacent teeth.

Benefits of Cercon Ceramics

Cercon zirconia ceramics offer significant advantages over conventional metal-ceramic restorations: Natural-looking aesthetics: the translucency and colour of zirconia closely replicate natural teeth. There is no dark metal margin at the gumline, a common issue with metal-ceramic crowns. Biocompatibility: zirconia is a biocompatible material that does not cause allergies or gum irritation. It is well suited for patients with metal sensitivities. High strength: zirconium oxide is one of the strongest ceramic materials, resistant to fracture and wear. It is suitable even for posterior teeth subjected to heavy chewing forces. Precision fit: CAD/CAM fabrication ensures micron-level accuracy, resulting in a better fit, less microleakage, and a longer lifespan for the restoration. Thermal insulation: unlike metal, zirconia does not conduct heat or cold, making teeth less sensitive to temperature changes. Longevity: with proper care, Cercon restorations can last over 15 years.
